You + Me = Endless Possibilities

“I hope this song starts a craze/ The kind of song that ignites the airwaves/ The kind of song that makes people glad/ To be where they are/ With whomever they’re there with” -Brand New “Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don’t”

There are few nights that I will remember as vividly as when I saw Kevin Devine, Manchester Orchestra and Brand New play at the Warfield in San Francisco in 2007. There are few moments when you witness musicians share a stage and truly enjoy one another. There was not a single moment that night that was wasted. Yes, there was something magical about that night at the Warfield, and it has yet to be recreated.

I have found myself over the years more and more drawn to this collective of musicians, this collective of friends. They are doing what this Project hopes to create someday-a community of friends that collaborate and support one another in their individual projects. Because that’s what this whole thing is all about-supporting one another. It’s about the local bands. It’s about the bands that open for the larger bands that come through town. It’s about you and me.

So when I heard that Kevin Devine had started a Kickstarter to fund his next two albums, I was stoked. Not only could I support someone who I was artistically in awe of, I could be part of the art. And after all, isn’t that what it’s really about? Isn’t that why we go to a show and sing along to our favorite songs with a room of complete strangers because we want to be a part of something bigger than ourselves? So, be bigger and support and share because one day it’ll come around back to you.

Tell All Your Friends

“Literate and stylish (literate and stylish)/Kissable and quiet (kissable and quiet)/ Well that’s what girls dreams are made of” -Taking Back Sunday “Timberwolves at New Jersey”

I finally made it to my 100th post, and I also bought my tickets to see Taking Back Sunday’s “Tell All Your Friends” 10th anniversary tour. So, all things considered, today was a pretty good day.

Haves and Have Nots

“Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” -Theodore Roosevelt

At the beginning of every year, I pick a motto that I will keep in the back of my mind as decisions and obstacles come my way. For 2012, I decided that I would work with what I’ve got. I never thought that it would pertain to my life so much, but in just six months my motto has been my saving grace. Instead of jumping ahead, I have to ground myself in simply what I have to work with. It seems so simple, but everyone likes to dream. Everyone likes to imagine certain things. Everyone hopes for a happy ending. And lately, I have had to focus on what I do not have. It can be hard seeing things as they truly are. Because sometimes, it takes you seeing what you do not have to realize what you should have. And we should all have at least that.

Young and in Love

“You’re just jealous cause we’re young and in love.” -Brand New (Soco Amaretto Lime)

In a sweltering hot auditorium in the beginning of September in Chico, California, there was a rock show. The energy in the air was electric and would shock you instantly. My delicious ice cold beer was finally settling in me. Swarms of people were buzzing as the Robbers and then Sainthood Reps came on. And in those moments, my heart was bursting. The sheer amount of passion on stage could bring you to tears. And then the auditorium went black, and the entire crowd was chanting, “BRAND NEW! BRAND NEW!” It had been two years since I had seen them live. The anticipation gave me sweaty palms, and my beer was shaking in my hand. So, it was no surprise that when Brand New swept the stage, I was beyond elation; I was beyond emotion. I just was. My words seemed to melt in the air as soon as I would sing them back to Jesse Lacey, and my screaming never seemed to be loud enough. My body was in shock because I forgot what it was like to feel a celebration like that. I forgot what this band did to me, and when Jesse thanked everyone for coming out for the hundredth time, a small tear formed in my eye. Because when you are in a sold out show of a band that has penetrated your heart, you feel at home knowing that everyone around you feels the exact same way. And I want to stay just like that forever.

Find A Way To Do What You Love To Do

“Let’s write the songs that they want/ I thought they’d love us, but they don’t” -Emery (Do The Things You Want)

If you are lucky, you remember vividly the day that you were punched in the gut and fell madly, deeply in love with music. Music was always a flirtation for me. It was always surging through me, but something burst in me that night when I was introduced to Brand New. When I first watched “Before the Music Dies” (http://www.hulu.com/watch/62945/before-the-music-dies), it struck me just how much that little band, and music in general had changed me. Every album that Brand New released was completely different than the last, and I embraced it. I loved their music and wanted them to change. As a fan, I allowed them to change.

Perhaps, I love them even more because they are so elusive. You are not allowed to take pictures at their concerts, they tried desperately to get dropped from a major label, and Jesse even wrote a completely new album after one of their albums leaked on the internet. It is sacred to them and that makes it sacred to me. They don’t write music that they think people will like; they write music that they love. Other people do not need to validate their art; they validate it for themselves. They create because they were made to create. They found a way to do what they love to do, and I hope that you find it too.

Kyle Is A Penguin

“I hope this song starts a craze/ The kind of song that ignites the airwaves/ The kind of song that makes people glad to be where they are, with whoever they’re there with” -Brand New (I Believe You But My Tommy Gun Don’t)

The crisp September night danced around Kyle’s dusty blue sedan as we raced through the back roads of Spartanburg County. I was staring out the window as Kyle screamed from the front seat, “Amanda Polick! I want you to listen to this band. They’re called Brand New, and they’ll rock your face off.” And they really did. I vividly remember the first moment that I heard “Jude Law and a Semester Abroad”, and from that point everything changed. I still get butterflies in my stomach thinking of that night; the night that I fell madly in love with music. At sixteen, it felt like time was constantly expanding, but so very precious at the same time. That night was the first time that I remember sitting in the moment and knowing that it was a forever kind of moment. And knowing that Kyle was a forever kind of friend.

The last nine years have been filled with endless amounts of mix tapes, epic concerts that left us wanting far more than the three hours of music that we received, and resounding late night chats about our dreams. So, when he told me that he was starting Upstate Recordings and Management (http://www.upstaterecordings.com/) with a friend of ours, I could not have been more excited. Music is his heartbeat, and his passion is supporting local bands. Kyle told me once, “Amanda Polick, I know that you can accomplish anything that you set your mind to. I don’t mean that in a cheesy way. It’s the truth.” Well, Kyle Cheleotis, I know that you are changing the music scene in South Carolina, and I could not be prouder to call you my friend. And I know that one September night some girl will fall in love with a band that you produce just like I fell in love with Brand New.
